Abyssinian Cat
Abyssinian Cats are one of the oldest known breed of cats, with many conflicting stories regarding its origins. Some claim that the entire lineage is descended from a cat named Zula that was taken from a port in Alexandria, Egypt, by a British soldier and brought to England where it was cross-bred with an English Tabby cat. Others claim that the breed can be found wild and pure in North Africa. And, others make claims that the breed has been intermixed with a cat from Libya. Regardless of the confusion surrounding the Abyssinian Cat history, the breed is the #6 most popular breed in United States today, according to breed registrations with the Cat Fanciers Association, (CFA). And, it is no surprise just how popular the breed is, as the Abyssinian Cat is considered one of the most intelligent cats there are. Extremely inquisitive, and devoted this cat makes an excellent companion, and will follow your every move. Abyssinians are extroverted, and willful too, and are generally not lap-cats. Their intelligence makes them way too curious, and they love exploring and playing. However, it is important to note that Abyssinian cats require loads of contact with their owners in order for them to be happy. They will get depressed and anxious without daily activity and attention.
In general Abys (as they are referred to by fans of the breed) get along with other cats and dogs, particularly if they are socialized with them from kitten-hood. However, it is important to note that they do need their space, and like to have a place to retreat to. A good cat house, or a scratching post with nooks and crannies to hide in are a great solution. Also, female Abys can be more irritable than male Abys around other cats. Being a short-haired cat breed makes grooming your Abys easier. Once weekly brushing, is all that's needed to keep their coats shiny and smooth. Read Cat Grooming 101 for general care how-to's. All in all, the Abyssinian makes for a wonderful companion cat. |
