The British Shorthair cat, first known as the British Blue,  has been gaining popularity in the United States because of the breeds calm, easy-going demeanor, high level of intelligence, stamina and loyalty to its owners. The Shorthair is one of Great Brittain's oldest breed of cat, and its lineage can be traced back to the domestic cats of Rome where it was valued for its strength and hunting skill.

First recognized by the CFA, (Cat Fanicer's Association) in 1980 the British Shorthair is still considered rare in the USA.  However, breeders are beginning to export the Shorthair from Ireland, England, New Zealand and Australia in an attempt to help stimulate the US gene pool and meet the increasing demand that has been partially fueled by movies and commercials depicting the breed.

The CFA standards for the Breed is that the British Shorthair should have a short, plush, easy to groom, luxurious coat.  The British Shorthair's eyes are large, round and copper in color. Addittionallly, they have round heads with full cheeks, short legs, accompanied by a sturdy, larger, muscular, rounded body, with plush tails.

The British Shorthair's lifespan is generally  14-20 years.
