Maine Coon Cat

Maine Coon Cats are one of the oldest, and largest domesticated cat breeds in the United Sates. Originating from the state of Maine (hence the name) the breed has a fanciful history littered with legend, such as; the cat was developed from matings between semi-wild, domestic cats and raccoons. Which is absurd, and biologically impossible. Other tales purport that Marie Antoinette invented the breed. While it is fun to hear the tales, none of them are true. And, unfortunately, no one really knows for sure exactly how the breed originated. The most plausible theory by breeders today is that the breed was developed by mating short-haired domestic US cats, with long-haired cats from overseas that were brought by the Vikings.

Regardless of its true origin, the Maine Coon Cat is a delightful and hearty breed that is sure to please because it is so people-oriented, and known to meander with its owners rather than demand attention at all times. Maine Coon Cats are also extremely playful, and not in the least stand-offish. In fact some Coon Cats will even play fetch with you! The Maine Coon cat does not tend to be vocal, and when they do chose to "speak" it is more of a sweet chirp. A very independent breed that will serve as a companion, but will rarely, if ever, look to be babied. Actually, they will probably seek to help you while doing tasks!

The breed is well-adapted for the harsh climates of New England weather, and has a coat unlike any other cat that is glossy, thick and water repelling. The only way to truly understand the coat is to feel it! The breed has longer hair on the stomach and britches, as well as the ruff, with shorter hair on the back and neck. The breed also has a large bushy tail, and ears that are extra furry both inside and out. However, even though they are long-haired cats, they are relatively easy to groom. Once weekly brushing is generally all that is needed. Refer to Cat Grooming 101 for extra tips, and tricks on how to keep your cat in tip top shape!

Now, even though the Maine Coon cat is one of the largest domesticated cat breeds you shouldn't believe the tales about the 30 pound cats. In fact, males should weigh between 13 and 19 pounds, while females should weigh in at about 10-16 pounds. There fluffy coat makes them appear larger than they are, and when you pick one up, you realize that they are not quite as heavy as they look.

The Maine Coon Cat comes in a number of color variations, the only pattern you really won't see in the breed is pointed like Siamese Cats.

The Maine Coon Cat makes a wonderful family pet because it generally does very well with children and other animals, especially when raised together. I feel comfortable recommending this breed to both experienced, and inexperienced pet owners.
