The Ragdoll Cat

The Ragdoll breed was created in the 1960's by Ann Baker by combining a white female Persian cat and a male Birman, and then later introducing a female Burmese into the breeding program. The breed was later standardized by a husband and wife team which owned Ann Bakers original Ragdoll cats throug a very selective breeding program. The cats are now bred Ragdoll to Ragdoll only, with no crossing of any other breeds.

As their name implies Ragdolls are extremely docile, non-agressive cats that are very peole oriented and good in homes with other pets. They tend not to be very vocal, or active and will generally let their humans cuddle with, and hold them like babies.

Ragdolls are easy to train if you use a praise and reward method. For example, when the cat uses the scratching post instead of your furniture lavish praise and treats should be given to reinforce the behavior. Because Ragdolls have a natural desire to please their humans, they will mentally note your approval and will repeat their good behavior over and over looking for the same response from you.

Ragdolls are large, heavy cats that usually weigh between 12-20 pounds. They have large oval, blue eyes and sweet expressions, with rounded ears set slightly forward. They also usually have longer fur around their necks, this is called a ruff, and the good news is that their fur doesn't mat or tangle easily. Thats not to say that they require no grooming.  Generally speaking combing out their fur once weekly will help curtail shedding, and will keep their coats in tip-top shape.

Ragdolls are good with children as their laid back nature makes them very tolerant of the sometimes rough play children can dish out. However, this laid-back attitude of theirs is of no use to them if let outside to play as they have no natural instinct to defend themselves. This breed is strictly an indoor cat only! They can be trained to use a leash, and they do enjoy going for walks on them for fresh air and outdoor stimulation.
