Akita
The Akita is a powerful, strong, assertive and independent dog that would work best with someone that has extensive dog ownership and training experience. However, with proper socialization, guidance, love and obedience training Akitas can become a very loyal and devoted pet. Generally speaking, Akitas do not fare well with other dogs, as their natural tendency is to be dominant. On the other hand if socialized properly from a very early age they can become tolerant of other dogs in the household provided those dogs do not attempt to take the Alpha position. I would not recommend other small animals in the house like cats, rabbits or hamsters as this could try your Akita's patience a little too much. Children can also be tolerated by Akitas provided the child is taught how to properly interact with the dog. As with all breeds, supervision is necessary with children. I would also further say, that just because your Akita tolerates your child, doesn't mean that he will tolerate someone elses. Take extra special care when bringing new children into the home, as Akitas can become very protective and dominant.
Akitas have beautiful, straight harsh coats, with soft dense undercoats. As they are year-round sheders, they would not work well for an allergy sufferer. Grooming requirements are brushing 2-3x per week, and bi-monthly bathing in order to maintain his/her coat. Pay special attention to your Akitas eyes and ears, and make sure to shave his bottom for hygienic purposes. I suggest reading Dog Grooming 101 to guide you more thoroughly in the areas of grooming. While Akitas are loyal and devoted, do not expect an overly affectionate lap dog in this breed. They are more comfortable observing their owners from afar, and engaging you for play. If your Akita is affectionate, it is because he/she senses your need for affection rather than endulging their own need for affection. However, as with all generalizations, there are many exceptions to the rule, and there are some Akitas that enjoy both giving and receiving affection.
