The Basset Hound
The Basset Hound is ideal for the inexperienced dog owner because of its mild mannered, even tempered, disposition. The breed also works out really well in homes with children and other animals because of its sociable nature. Generally peace-loving, with a sunny attitude, this dog's personality can go one of two ways, either to love to play the role of clown, or to be dignified and calm. Known for being mostly polite and easy going around strangers, Basset Hounds make fantastic companions as they enjoy observing their owners throughout the day.
Basset Hounds have a tendency to put on weight as many of them grow lazy as they age. Daily walks, and moderate exercise are necessary to keep them fit and healthy. Due to their responsive nature, the breed does relatively well with patient training methods. However Basset Hounds sometimes stubborn nature can make them difficult to Housebreak. Their love of food can be used in training to ease the level of difficulty. However, I do caution that their love of food also needs to be watched, as they will steal unattended meals and snacks, and will eat just about anything they find on the floor. Pay attention when taking them for walks that they don't scavenge things that could make them ill.
