The Beagle
Beagles were bred to follow their nose, and that is exactly what they do. If you don't have a home with a secure yard, or you desire a dog that you can walk without a leash, a Beagle is not for you. Once they catch a scent its as if all their other senses cease, and it will be very difficult to get them to heed your commands, or even know that you are there! You must be particularly cautious as this curious streak of theirs can lead them into danger, i.e., it is not unlike a Beagle to catch a scent and follow it straight into the street! Beagles should never be left unattended in a yard, even with a fence, as they can dig themselves a hole right under it. In fact I would go as far as to say that if I were stuck in a Mexican prison I would want a Beagle as my cell mate, as I guarantee he would find a way to get us both out. Consider yourself warned.
On the other hand Beagles are quite charming, playful, and sociable, and suited to inexperienced dog owners, as well as homes with children. While they get on well with other dogs, particularly of the same breed they do have a tendency to chase after small animals. So introducing a Beagle to your home if you have other small pets may not be the best of ideas.
The Beagle will not disappoint you if you are seeking an affectionate dog. They will dote attention on you with the best of them, especially if you are around food. Speaking of which, Food is their #1 Love (next to you of course). Be very careful about feeding this Breed, they are prone to obesity and will pretend to be starving even after a full meal. Don't let those sweet eyes of theirs fool you! I can't stress how important it is not to overfeed this breed, and not to fall for their infamous puppy eyes when they beg. And beg they will!
Be consistent with your training, as Beagles are known for their stubbornness. Teething Beagles are chewers, and I wouldn't recommend leaving them alone with anything you wouldn't want eaten. Including your sofa and shoes! Once they get over teething this behavior seems to correct itself.
