The Boxer

boxer.jpgBoxers are highly intelligent, affectionate, devoted, dogs that are loaded with oodles of energy.  Their friendly and playful nature will keep you occupied, and care is needed around small children as they can easily knock a child to the ground while playing.  Boxers devotion, and love for their family makes them highly effective watchdogs.  The breed is generally OK with other animals, however, some can be aggressive and dominant around other dogs, particularly those of the same sex.  Take the time to socialize them early on, as this will definitely lessen their natural dominance towards other dogs.  The Boxer is the perfect choice for people looking for a fun-loving, energetic dog, that loves to play and dote attention on them. Note:  Their energy levels will slightly decrease with age, and they can become calm and dignified as they grow older, but this doesn't change their playful nature.

Boxer's reactions to strangers can vary greatly, and socializing and training are a necessity, particularly if your Boxer is more on the protective side.  Another training note:  Boxers intelligence and headstrong nature can make training a challenge.  Our advice, keep them as entertained as possible while learning, and give lots of praise and affection as a reward for a job well done.  Boxers are very motivated by our love and affection.  Having confidence, being assertive, and calm are the most effective ways to interact with this breed, and will definitely help you establish yourself as pack leader.

Boxers tend to be relatively easy to groom in comparison to breeds like the Shih Tzu, or Old English Sheepdog. Brushing 1-2x per week to remove dead skin and hair, and wiping your dog down with a damp cloth is generally all that is needed to keep their coats in great shape. Bathing 4x a year is suggested, your dog may need it a bit more often depending on how regularly he romps in the mud. Read Dog Grooming 101 to learn how to maintain your dog's eyes, ears, and nails, as well as learning proper bathing techniques and the importance of brushing your dog's teeth.
