The Bulldog
Bulldogs short stout body, sad wrinkled face and calm demeanor make the breed both charming and endearing. It is easy to fall in love with a Bulldog at first glance because their glum expression screams love me! However, glum could not be more opposite than the breeds actual disposition. Bulldogs are comical, easy going, gentle and affectionate dogs that love to entertain their humans. Bulldogs generally make a wonderful addittion to any family as they are EXCELLENT with children and other animals, provided that neither takes food from their bowl! While Bulldogs have many wonderful qualities they can sometimes be stubborn, and really do best with calm, consistent training methods. They also respond really well to praise, and treats. Additionally, Bulldogs have a tendency to be lazy and to overeat. As such they should be exercised daily for health reasons. However, daily exercise for a Bulldog means a leisurely stroll in the park, or a short game of fetch, as the Bulldog body was not built for agility and stamina. Bulldogs are prone to heart attack, and special care should be given while playing with this breed. If you see that your Bulldog is out of breath this should be your cue to stop. Also, because they are short-haired dogs they do not do well in heat as their skin is easily burned.
As for grooming brushing your Bulldog once a week to remove dead hair and wiping him/her down with a damp cloth is all that is needed to keep it's coat shiny and healthy. Bathing at least 4 times per year for hygenic purposes is also a good rule of thumb. However, you will need to clean your Bulldogs eyes daily as they are prone to eye infections, and you should also clean their ears once per week, as well as the folds on his face to prevent infection. I can comfortably recommend a Bulldog to both an experienced and inexperienced dog owner as a pet.
