The Dachshund

  longhaireddachshund.jpg

Originally bred to be hunters, now Dachshunds are most often regarded as a companion dog.  This breed adores being around people and will rarely, if ever exhibit signs of aggression. The Dachshund is an all-around friendly dog, is very outgoing, and is sure to melt the hearts of all around with his clownish disposition.

The fun loving Dachshund is tenacious, and lively, but can also be mischievous, jealous and very irritable when bored. This breed isn't a good choice for homes with small children.  However, Dachshunds do get on well with older more gentle children. Because of the Dachshund's small stature, this breed is not a good choice for homes with larger dogs unless all raised together from a very young age. The Dachshund generally gets along with other small, or toy breeds provided that the other dog is not snippy.

Dachshunds can be stubborn which makes training difficult for the average person, and because this breed is sensitive to criticism, and harsh correction, a gentle, but firm assertive approach usually works best.
