The Dalmatian
Dalmatians are very active dogs and need plenty of exercise. They are fast runners, with high stamina which is why they are often the breed of choice as Fire House pets. Their sociable and playful disposition make them a good choice for households with children, though supervision and caution should be the rule around very small children, as they can easily knock a small child over while playing. Dalmatians also have an instinctive fondness for human beings and horses. Their high-level of intelligence and natural survival instincts make them difficult to train. Dalmatians seem to respond best to a calm, assertive, pack-leader style of training. While they are forgiving of rough handling by children, it is important that they be socialized with children while still puppies, and also that children be taught the correct way to play with animals.
Dalmatians are very sensitive to the absence of their owners. As such, they should be trained to cope with being left, or be provided with another companion animal. Dalmations crave human companionship and are not good "backyard" pets. If you do not have the time to exercise them, play with and nurture them this may not be the right breed for you. Note: When bored Dalmatians have a tendency to be destructive.
