 The German Shepherd Dog

germanshephard.jpg

The German Shepherd Dog was originally used for herding in Germany, where it originates. However, the breeds high intelligence was quickly recognized and the dog evolved into police, military, guard and search and rescue work. The German Shepherd was registered with the American Kennel Club, AKC, in 1908 and has risen to the #3 spot on their list.

This powerful, smart, and fiercely loyal dog is extremely proficient as a watch dog. And, if the dog senses that his pack or human family is in danger he will fight to his own death to protect them.

The German Shepherd is among the most highly intelligent dog breeds there are, and he is very easily trained in both simple, and complex commands which is why this dog has become so prized by the police and military. Having said that, I will warn that the breed does have a tendency towards dominance and needs an owner that is a true leader. The German Shepherd will respond best to firm, calm, assertive training styles, and is extremely eager to please once he has accepted your position as Alpha.

Caution is needed with other dogs, and cats in particular. Early socialization is critical for German Shepherds from a very young age to prevent aggression, and even attacks on other animals. However, if properly socialized German Shepherds can do very well in a multi-pet home provided that the other pets respect his position in the pecking order.

Never ever isolate or forget to stimulate this breed both physically and mentally. This could lead to extreme obedience, and destruction issues in your home. As with all intelligent dogs, it is not enough to simply provide exercise, you should also provide challenges and problem solving to keep his mind healthy and active. I suggest, obstacle courses, a problem solving techniques as are discussed in the article about Doberman Pinschers.

These dogs are heavy year-round shedders and are not recommended for allergy sufferers. To keep their coats healthy, I suggest brushing 3-4 times a week to remove dead hair, and monthly baths. It has been my experience that German Shepherds actually enjoy being bathed and rarely give their owners trouble in this respect.

I recommend this breed to those with some experience in dog training, that have a strong dominant personality themselves.
