 The Labrador Retriever

labradorretrieverwithbow.jpg

The Labrador Retriever originated in Canada where it was used to help fishermen. The Labrador's job duties later evolved to becoming Seeing Eye Dogs, and working with police. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1917, and is the most popular and highly ranked of all the dog breeds because of the dogs incredible nature!

Labrador Retrievers are sweet, loyal and devoted dogs that are excellent family pets. They are generally obedient and very responsive to training. Which makes them the perfect choice for many new dog owners. They are extremely social, and adore spending time with their human families. As such, I would not recommend this breed to those that do not have much time to spend with their dogs, as Labs, more so than other breeds, really depend on their human owners for happiness and satisfaction. They can become quite destructive, and suffer terrible Separation Anxiety if not given enough exercise and affection.

However, if you do have the time, Labrador Retrievers are one of the absolute best choices of dog for a family, as they get along well with Children, other animals, and even strangers. Seldom do I hear complaints about Labs having difficulty in a multi pet home!

As for grooming, their short, close-fitting, sleek coat requires weekly brushing to remove dead hair, and weekly wipe downs with a damp cloth. Bathing is recommended every-other month. During high-shedding season, you might want to brush your Labrador Retrievers coat 3 times per week, just to keep things tidy around your home.
