The Poodle
The Poodle is the only breed that comes in three different size variations, Toy, Miniature and Standard. These name distinctions refer strictly to size, and not disposition, etc. Which is probably why the breed is so popular, and on the American Kennel Club's Top 10 Most Popular Dog List. Originally from Germany, and later developed in France, Poodles were once used as water retrievers. Now, however, Poodles are more widely considered show dogs or companion pets. The breed was registered with the AKC in 1887. Poodles are extremely intelligent contrary to popular belief, and are also generally polite and affectionate dogs. However, early socialization is critical with this breed as some lines are more anxious than others, while other lines can be extremely shy. If proper socialization does occur Poodles often become very dog friendly and are good with children. As with all toy breeds, children should be taught how to play gently so as not to hurt the animal, and if you own a Standard size Poodle, supervision is necessary to ensure that the dog doesn't accidentally knock down the child while playing. Poodle grooming is not as difficult as it may look. Brushing 2-3x per week, monthly baths, and clips every 6-8 weeks will keep your Poodle's coat in tip top shape. If you chose not to brush your Poodle's coat, it will cord on its own. Make sure to keep their nails clipped, and bottom's shaved for hygiene purposes. Poodles are a breed that require a fair amount of attention in order to be happy. I do not recommend this breed if you are often away, or work long hours. However, if you do have the time to devote to this loving breed, they can make wonderful family pets!
